Scholar Application

Applications for the 2019 Junior Scholar programme opens 31 March 2018 and closes on 31 July 2018 at 15H00.

Please read the information below carefully before downloading the application form and submitting an application.

Please check your eligibility before applying.

Qualifying criteria:

  • Only scholars in Grade 6 may apply
  • Scholars should have a minimum of 60% for Maths, English and Physical Science in grade5 and term 1 of Grade 6 if they wish to apply
  • Only scholars within the KMF catchment area in the Western Cape may apply as scholars; must be able to attend classes at our Belville office over weekends
  • Gross Income (Total income before deductions) per household may not exceed R15 000 per month
  • All applications must be delivered by hand or posted
  • Application forms received via e-mail or fax will not be accepted
  • Applications must be submitted via post or hand delivered before 15h00 on 31 July of each year
  • Please attach all the required documents. The application will be rejected should the required documents not be attached
  • A valid cellular number and e-mail address must be provided; should the contact number or e-mail address be incorrect, we will not be able to advise whether the application has been successful or not
  • Please consider the application unsuccessful if you have not been contacted by the Kay Mason Foundation before November each year
  • KMF is not obliged to give reasons why an application was unsuccessful 

Non-SA Citizens

Applications from Non-SA Citizens will only be accepted on the following conditions:

  • The scholar must be born in South Africa, or
  • At least one of the parents of the scholar must have permanent residency in South Africa. Proof of residency must be provided with the application form.


All applications will be reviewed after 31 July.

  • After the first evaluation process, if the scholar is selected, he/she will be required to write an academic test
  • Scholars will be notified by e-mail and sms of the exact date, time and location for the test
  • Based on the academic test results, a limited number of scholars will be selected for a panel interview and will be advised of the exact date, time and location for the interview
  • After the panel interview, successful candidates will be informed of the outcome before end November.

KMF prefers to communicate with scholars and parents/guardians using e-mail. Please ensure that you provide an e-mail address on the application form that is accessible by the scholar and parents/guardians. This may be your own e-mail address or that of a relative or close friend who will advise you if e-mail correspondence is delivered for your attention. For your information, a “gmail” account is free to set up!
